QUALITY FISHING TOOLS ON A BUDGET: As an avid outdoorsman, like many of you, I am always looking for a good buy. When it comes to fishing tackle, I like to feel as though I am getting a quality product for a fair price. Having been around long enough to know that you basically get what you pay for, I am willing to shell out a reasonable amount of cash providing I get a decent product in return. I have fished with these products and would like to pass along some of the info which might prove helpful to those who may be considering purchasing additional fishing equipment. As far fishing reels, I have a couple that I can recommend for your consideration. Both of these are low-profile, high quality, medium priced reels. The first is a Revo "S" model made by Abu Garcia which is a company familiar to most serious anglers. Revo's are a line of very light, strong, smooth, low-profile reels introduced by Abu almost two years ago and have been a huge hit with serious fishermen.
The "S" model has 8 stainless steel bearings plus one roller bearing, a one-piece aluminum frame and crank side cover, Carbon Matrix (patented) drag system, Duragear brass gears plus an oversized main gear. Some of the other Revo models do have more settings, but the manner in which these reels perform finds me seldom needing to make adjustments. I have many of the other Revo models and they are all awesome reels, many of which are designed for specific purposes. However, the Revo S model, weighing 8.6 ounces with a line capacity of 12/140 and 6:4:1 gear ratio, is a great buy for an angler wanting a high quality reel with a moderate investment. The other reel to suggest is called Pro Max and is a new addition from Abu Garcia for 2008. This reel has many of the low profile design features that Revos have and has a look and feel of a Revo. The list price is $79 and comes with 8 bearings, Duragear Brass gears, Power Disk drag system, MagTrax brake system, 6:2:1 gear ratio, weighs just 7.86 ounces and holds 12/160 line capacity. I own one of these and have used it to Carolina rig for several months and it does a great job and is worth your serious consideration. A third group of products to introduce to you is Berkley's Tactix rod series. They are very affordable ranging from $39 to $59. I have several of them and they are light, durable rods with great sensitivity. These rods were developed by Berkley's pro staff and have IM7 graphite blanks for lightness/toughness and the series also comes with Hard Chromium SS304 guide system. I especially like their 7 foot medium heavy model which is listed as model number TXC701MH. This rod list for $59 and works great for medium worming as well as medium to large size spinnerbaits. I also took it with me to Big Lake, which is an inland saltwater lake near Lake Charles, and caught several big redfish with it. Hopefully, with these suggestions, some of you in the market for a decent rod and reel will be able to find one without spending a huge amount of this month's budget. WHAT'S UP DOCK? One day last fall on Toledo I fished by a large, beautiful new dock that I knew was not there a few days prior. I checked it out pretty closely because I was so impressed that it was erected so quickly, its attractiveness and the building material was very high quality. It was a clean design and it really stood out. Since last fall I have observed several other new docks in the area (south Toledo) of similar design and found out these docks are built by a company named Wahoo Docks from Gainesville, GA. In checking Wahoo online, I found that these docks are made from aluminum and each dock is individually modeled using the latest design software by experienced engineers who understand the strengths and weakness of aluminum and design accordingly. As far as durability, all of the materials are man-made and will not rot and need very little maintenance. These docks come in all shapes and sizes, are suitable for both private and commercial uses and have numerous options such as huge upper decks/ sun decks as well as boat lifts. Waterfront property anywhere is greatly enhanced by adding an attractive dock as it turns the area into a very multi- use facility. It does require an investment but a first class boat dock will add substantially to the value of waterfront property. Boating is made easier as it provides boat slips making it much more pleasant when it comes to getting in and out of your boat. Fishing is also improved on the property as docks draw fish like a magnet and they also make a nice sitting area to enjoy the lake whether or not the fish are biting. I discovered that Wahoo products are sold exclusively by a network of certified dealers throughout the country who are equipped with training and experience to handle all the issues of construction, installation and anchoring. Area Wahoo dealers are Eddie and Bertha Barlow at 409-565-1288. The sell to both Louisiana and Texas customers and have done business in private, commercial as well as government contracts. To check out Wahoo for yourself go to www.wahoodocks.com. You will be impressed.
